03.29 CO2 is good for you?

6 05 2007

The author of this blog felt that although a change in the amount of pollution we create is needed, going to such a drastic change as our governments have been pushing, is not necessary. After analyzing the information and views of two Ottawa scientists, it has come to the attention of more and more activists’lobbyists that human production might not have as much of a role in Global Warming as once thought. Instead, it may be a natural process which the sun goes through which effects our planet. “‘…changes in the brightness of the sun’ are almost certainly the primary cause of the warming trend since the end of the ‘Little Ice Age’ in the late 19th century. Human emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), the gas of concern in most plans to curb climate change, appear to have little effect on global climate…” What is even more interesting is that theses two scientists suggest the growth in CO2 emission, which many scientists have suggested as being the ultimate problem, is actually a good thing, calling the gas “plant food” which only helps the environment. They do however still recognize the need to cut polution, but the author states that the amount of money and time spent on cutting emissions should be designated to other, more important problems where the U.S. funds aid. An example which he stressed was the need to spend much of this money on providing clean water to Africa. This brings the question: Should America be focusing more on the environmental problems (where clean causation and a need for immediate solution is debatable) or should we focus money on areas which we are positive of the situation and solution?

03.26 bye bye birdie

6 05 2007

This blog was rather interesting because it was written by someone from Great Britain about a present problem, supposedly caused by Global Warming. As the bird flu has been a problem in Britain, it seems that scientists have related the spread and length of the disease to be because of Global Warming. The problem only seems to be getting worse. The RSPCA, and environmental organization has researched the damage reporting that over 5 years songbirds are now at their lowest level in gardens. The amount of Blackbirds has decreased and overwhelming 25%. “Robin numbers are down by more than a third in the past decade.” The problem is that it is  difficult to measure the amount of birds in one area, and if they are dieing or just moving to a new location. And in addition, why they would be moving. The RSPCA has asked birdwatchers to report if they see certain birds, but the problem is that birdwatchers may report less than they see in order for the government to bring more funding to save these birds. As Global warming is the blame, we must wonder, is the idea just a “cop-out”. I read in another blog that environmentalists are now relating their studies to Global warming in order to get more funding, as the government is now focusing so much on it and throwing other environmental issues to the end of their priority list. Could the relation of birds dieing and global warming be false? Could the birds just have moved or could scientists just be reporting smaller numbers now in order to jump of the band wagon of Global warming and receive more funding? Could the scientists reporting “Bye Bye Birdie” just be “crying wolf”… and can we blame them?

03.22 Global Warming Shrinks Brains?

6 05 2007

While most of this blog entry focused on attacking Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma, it brought incredibly interesting  information in the process. It seems that within the next year, a study by two scientists, Dr. Jessica Ash and Dr. Gordon Gallup, will be published with some soon-to-be highly debated topics. After analyzing 109 fossilized human skulls from around the world, both discovered that the closer to the equator, the smaller the brain size. They reasoned this to be caused by the relative temperatures of the regins. “This kind of talk harkens back to social darwinism and is sure to kick up skirmishes over race, IQ, inherited intelligence, etc., etc. They further suggested, that because of the change in heat signifying an adaption in brain size, this might mean that as our earth gets hotter during global warming, our brains might get smaller. Now that is definitly something to think about…

03.20 Nuclear Power

6 05 2007

While government money is quickly being thrown at the problem of Global Warming (i.e.- research and prevention) the author of this blog believes there is a form of power which lacks the recognition needed. Nuclear energy is being ignored for two strong reasons, he claims. The first is that enforcment of it will counter other, more efficient ideas of how to stabalize growth. Public transportation, for example would be an alternative to using cars, as cars need oil to run. But, if a nucular energy system was provided for cars to run, then the more efficient alternative would be ignored, as people stubornly depend on cars and often would rather use this then a new transportation system they are not used to. If we just convert to nuclear power, it would be an easy fix, where companies would not feel that changing their methods to be more efficient would be as inecessary. Secondly, the word “nuclear” is one which society is not comfortable with. Although nuclear power does not produce green house gases, society is afraid that other, unexpected problems may arise from it, as nuclear power is seen by many as powerful and unstable. So one must ask, is nuclear power just a quick fix, or is it really the cure to global warming. And, if it is the cure, will we be too afraid to ever find out what a miricle it is?

03.13 Hot-Cold blame Game

6 05 2007

Hot-Cold Blame GameAnn Bancroft and Lib Arnesen are two explorerists/researchers who have traveled in the coldest of weathers for amusment and information. Just recently they both planned an excursion across the Arctic Ocean to learn more about Global Warming, expecting to find proof to bring back. Unfortunitly, they could not finish the trip. Right after starting the adventure, Liv Arnesen suffered from frost bite. They planned the journy well in advance, and researched the expected temperatures and weather but didn’t expect nearly that low of temperatures. When questioned about their views that while they attempted to find evidence of Global Warming, they actually found increasingly cold temperatures, they responded by saying that Global Warming brings unpredictability. Both blamed the cold on global warming. This brings an interesting point, that researchers and scientists can often bend information their way in order to support their case, and could be blinded by their stuborn views. One news blog which was mentioned in this blog was that of John Hawkins of Right News Blog who wrote: “By global warming alarmist logic, if they go to the North Pole and find melted polar ice, it’s evidence of global warming. On the other hand, if they go to the North Pole and it’s actually much colder than they expected, that’s also evidence of glbal warming.”

03.11 Amen

6 05 2007

It is often beneficial to analyze the view point of someone who is not involved directly in politics or the environment. The author of this blog, identifies herself not as a scientist, or a politician, (who, in her perception, merely complains and does nothing to change what he/she complains about). Instead she identifies as a Christian evangelist activist. Her blog relates how her religious group cold work together and make positive changes to the earth which reflect their values. The idea originated in her mind after she read that 86 leaders of the evangelical Christian faith had decided a year ago to support efforts to control Global Warming. She illustrates a combined force of dedicated Christians working towards progress. “After all, can you imagine what will happen when Americans stop focusing on disagreements and start working together for this common good?… Can you picture one billion Christians approaching the challenge of stopping Global Warming with the fervor of a revival, with faith infused by the Christ within? Our actions might even help heal the anti-Americanism we are seeing. What miracles we could bring about under the grace of God!”            This blog impacted me greatly, because although I do not necessarily agree with the preaching of her religious values the stressed necessity of prayer within the writing, she also manages to look beyond the borders of religion by putting petty differences aside when it comes to Global Warming. She explains that it is important for the conservative republicans in power, the same people who represent her values in the government, to look past the normally highly debated concepts of family life in accordance to abortion and homosexuality, and instead, to solely put all combined efforts to saving the planet and putting petty differences aside. She presents her utopian idea of connecting Christians around the world together in a joint effort to stop global warming, lobbying the Christian republicans in power to focus less on family life and more on supporting efforts against green-house gasses.              She depicts these people as, “acting on their own selfish desires to keep those who follow them under their thumbs. It is, after all, in their interest to keep the nation – and Christians – divided because they can play one against the other that way, to accomplish their own agendas of gaining and keeping personal power. None of them, after all, will be around in one hundred years to see the consequences.” To solve the problem of powerful conservative republicans not pushing for a need to help resolve global warming, the author gives a prayer to help. Although this is a unique approach, it is interesting to learn of the efforts being made by those who have a lack of power, and wish to unify in order to gain it. Even more interesting is how the author determines that this unified faith and morals can be the solution to both Global warming, and possibly other problems, such as negative depictions of America, republicanism, and the christian religion.

Prayer To Grow Environmental Evangelism
Dear God,
In Jesus’ name we affirm that all Christians awaken to the danger of climate change.
In Jesus name we affirm that it is easier and easier for us to conserve energy as individuals and as a society.
We thank You, dear Jesus, that it is a joy to become aware and purchase products only made by environmentally responsible companies.
We thank You, Jesus, that powerful Christian evangelists promote environmental activism among their faithful.
We thank You that, together, we are invincible in reversing the damage caused by pollution and Global Warming.
We thank You, Jesus, that all those who would continue to despoil the earth or advocate the despoiling of the earth for selfish political purposes disappear into the nothingness of political obscurity from which they came.
We thank You, Jesus, that all those who would continue to selfishly despoil the earth for profit lose their market share.
Thank You, Jesus, for empowering us so we now reclaim, restore and protect our beautiful earth.
She is Your beautiful gift to us and we protect and preserve her now in gratitude.
And so it is.

Brazil’s part

2 03 2007

In this article we see a glimmer of hope coming out of ashes from disaster. On the 8th of February, officials of
Brazil quickly reacted with a conference on the rehabilitation of their beloved country, after some tremendously disturbing information was brought to their attention. It is expected that within the next century the temperature will raise by 7 degrees Fahrenheit killing off our entire ecosystem. I admire that Brazil, a country of more limited resources than
America, is making the safety of the planet one of the most highly concentrated areas of their policy. Brazil plans to stop their contribution to global warming as much as possible, without hindering their economy, by stopping illegal logging and preparing their country for the effects of global warming within the next few decades. I feel that this was an important article to read because as the negative effects and doomsday theories of global warming are being presented, it is reassuring to hear of positive things being done of the issue, outside of our country, by other governments.
